What will we do after MySpace?

July 18, 2007 · No Comments

So, what will be the NBT (Next Best Thing) after social networks? The article I found which addresses this first looks back and then ahead.

Age #0 - eCommerce - the most primitive way of making money online. It’s identical to the real world…
Age #1 - Single Sign-on - Yahoo started out with a simple web directory, but their idea was to port traditional media business models to the online space. They weren’t focused on selling goods, but they brought great services together and glued them with a single sign-on mechanism.
Age #1.5 - Geocities - Geocities was one of many sites that provided free web hosting and web site creation services. However GeoCities was different in some ways. It was more like the social networking sites of today; the self expression level was high and the weird naming scheme based on city names gave it a human touch.
The Boom period (aka Dot Com) - The reason of the boom was the lack of calibration between the pace of internet applications and the internet infrastructure.
Age #2 - Search - What Google did was to offer a better search service with absolutely no clutter. Their sparse but highly efficient service opened the doors to big deals and hugely profitable online advertising.
Age #2.5 - On-demand Video
Age #3 - Social - MySpace kept growing, but it couldn’t take the necessary steps to become a real big thing…Only one company figured out the way of putting social interactions to the center of the web and it was Facebook.
Age #4 - Joost ??? - It’s hard to guess the 4th phase of the web because we don’t even have the 3rd one yet, fully. But what the past eras (see ages 1.5, 4 and 2.5) show is that we will end up with the rebirth of online TV.

So, what will be next? Who knows - I just know with the innovative things we are thinking, saying and doing - we will be right i the thick of it.

Everything 2.0

July 18, 2007 · No Comments

“Everything 2.0″ :: Wow, that about sums it up. I guess our job is done. :)

Seriously, I came across this web page called “Everything 2.0″ was blown away. Although I cannot figure out what “Authority” means (I think it is the metric software they use) - but even if we only look at the unique page view stat - WOW.

The top five start at 350,000+ and go up to 1.2 million. To put that in perspective, that is the approx. number we get in a month on Gazette Online - EACH DAY.

As you scroll down the page - there is some other cool stuff too…just more to think about.

Shopping Carts and Sales Tax

July 17, 2007 · No Comments

Shopping carts and sales tax has been the “hot” discussion lately as we try to figure out how many state and national tax laws we’ve broken in our tenure of e-commerce.

With that on my mind - this story about “E-Commerce Toolbox” caught my eye. While it doesn’t provide direct suggestions on solutions - it does lend an ear to things other online companies are doing.

So, if you know of an shopping cart that dices, chops and folds the laundry - drop me a message.

Poparatizi 2.0

July 16, 2007 · No Comments

Spy Media is an interesting site which mashing up poparatizi and web 2.0.

“Spy Media offers professional and amateur photographers two great ways to get paid for your photos and photography services. Our Spy Bounty service is an excellent source to find photo assignments that are relevant to your location, talent, and availability.”

How far does this kind of model go? Would we offer the same sort of thing for news stories? “I have $20 for coverage of the Solon little league game, $35 with pictures.” Does this work in the future?

In Plain English

July 16, 2007 · No Comments

I have recently discovered a site called CommonCraft which has been trying to explain some of the newer web technologies “in plain english”.

Three of the most popular are: wikis, RSS and social networking.

It is very cool to see some people trying to help promote and educate about web 2.0.

Pay Attention

July 13, 2007 · No Comments

This is a long video (7:41) - and moves a little slow, but the point is great and the same thing applies to us with our readers, viewers and consumers.

We have to engage them in the way they want to be engaged - are we willing to take the news and information we have compiled and send it to their phone, iPod and whatever device?

The video was originally posted on a site called “T4 - Pay Attention” and was designed for teachers.

Long Tail - the movie

July 13, 2007 · No Comments

This is a sarcasm piece put out on YouTube which pokes fun at big media. The clip: Day of the Long Tail. My favorite part is the last quote “The audience is up to something.” That just sums it up perfectly.

This is very similar to the epic 2015 piece which was put out a few years ago - talking about the future of the internet and has a big focus on newspapers.

What Is Web 2.0

July 12, 2007 · No Comments

This is a great little article explaining Web 2.0. O’Reilly put it out and it even has links to the conference we attended.

My favorite part is in the middle where it tells you in Web 1.0 the big dog was doubleclick, but in Web 2.0 it is Google Ad Sense. It goes down a large list and has it pretty well covered.

Startups to watch

July 12, 2007 · No Comments

OK - there are so many lists like this, it is nauseating sometimes. But what I like about this one is one of the details they have the company give us, business model. This is cool - now we can look at the different type of businesses and what they think that can make money from.

Here is the link to the CNN/Business 2.0 article.

Web 2.0 with IT

July 12, 2007 · No Comments

So the the GFOC Web 2.0 group gave our Web 2.0 presentation to our IT department at their monthly meeting. It was a little rough around the edges, we will have to polish back up and then see if we can do a few more of them.

It is always so interesting to hear the different comments and feel the vibe of the group. It was cool to hear the IT geeks asking a lot of questions about ROI and how we think “Web 2.0″ can make money.

I found this article/website which address some of that this morning, it is called Measuring Web 2.0: How to Promote the Features That Get the Best ROI. It doesn’t address the exact question the IT geeks had about how to sell it - but it addresses how you know what really impacts blogs, wikis, widgets and user-generated content you have.
