innovating stonehenge

March 31, 2008 · 1 Comment

Plan of Stonehenge today. After Cleal et al. and Pitts.Image from WikipediaThis Wally dude is awesome, I’d love to have a few guys like him around me.  He’s figured out the mysteries of Stonehenge - and figured out how to rasie a seriously heavy stone by himself.  Plans on recreating the entire thing in his backyard!

He says that he feels the whole thing could have been built by a handful of people, working a fairly short time.

He’s using concrete, but the same thing could be done with big ‘ol rocks.

This  reminds me of this place down in Florida called Coral Castle.  This dude named Edward Leedskalnin had some of the same principals figured out.

Now find me some innovative people like this and we can get some of this wedia stuff figured out!

Effective networking - art or science?

March 31, 2008 · No Comments

David and Jonathan The Biblical account of David and Jonathan has been read by some as the story of two lovers. Image from WikipediaFrom a post today from Jonathan Farrington’s blog called “Are You Really An Effective Networker?

Networking effectiveness starts with a positive personal attitude and an understanding that successful networking is built on a spirit of giving and sharing and not of bargaining and keeping score.

I love the last line in the quote above.   It’s like, dude…if you’re networking simply to see how many connections you can get, please!  But if you look at networking as a conversation and a relationship - it can be more sucessful or at least more fruitful.

I think of it like all these guys (Robert Scoble and  Jason Calacanus) who try and see how many Twitter followers they can aquire or facebook friends.  (And I understand they are looking at more as marketing than networking.)  But they are definitely not engaging people in two-way conversation, they cannot keep up if 10,000 Twiiter-fans and facebook friends are asking for help.

I think of it as more art than science myself, but there are definitely formulas to success.

Forums 2.0?

March 29, 2008 · No Comments

Source: WikipediaI love forums - and really they have been around forever. (Pre-internet is forever you know.) But I am really frustrated that there has been very little innovation in the area. Why s that?

Do they (forums) really not matter anymore? It seems like they were one of the first conversations to happen on the web. They pre-date IM and basically allow a “real-time” chat. (Its really close to realtime, you would refresh for new comments.)

I wonder if forums will evolve - or will they become obsolete via other technology. Wiki’s are great, but they don’t offer the conversation forums do. Twitter has the real time feel and conversation, but it is hard to archive and search the good information later.

So what is next? I’m not sure - although I’m not going to make it to the Web 2.0 conference in San Fran this year - I’m hoping to send the challenge along with a friend to pop it into a birds-of-feather session.

I want to build software like the expandable dining table

March 28, 2008 · No Comments

We’ve been having fun at e-Me looking at all the different expanding furniture YouTube has shown.

It got me thinking that we need to build software like this. It’s not that everything you write has to be the end all be all for every single application - but we need to be a bit more flexible when we build applications and especially web applications.

Now I’m sure Zuckerberg and the techs over at Facebook were not thinking expanding tables when they build “the facebook, but dang…it does seem to have some hidden expansion built in.

OK, I’ve got to go build a web innovation platform - now where did i put the table saw.

Google loses and gains in WiFi arena

March 25, 2008 · 1 Comment

I was very disappointed that Google didn’t try a little harder when it came to going after the 700Mhz by the FCC.  (It turns out that Verizon won the opportunity)

Then this story pops up on the New York Times and talks about Google going an alternative way:

Google, the Internet search engine company, released plans on Monday for a new generation of wireless devices to operate on soon-to-be-vacant television airwaves and sought to ease fears that this might interfere with TV broadcasts or wireless microphones.

In comments filed with the Federal Communications Commission, Google outlined plans for low-power devices that use local wireless airwaves to access the “white space” between television channels. A Google executive called the plan “Wi-Fi 2.0 or Wi-Fi on steroids.”

This could be interesting…so they didn’t spend the $9.6 Billion Verizon did, but did they gain a foothold in an area anyone could play?

In car WiFi with a Chrysler

March 24, 2008 · 1 Comment

It looks like the team over at Chrysler has gone for the gusto and plans to offer in car wifi in 2009.

Chrysler, the third-largest U.S. automaker, says it will be the first car company to provide in-car Internet access.

The feature will be added to existing vehicles by dealers beginning this year and later be installed on the assembly line, said Frank Klegon, Chrysler’s product development chief.

They will do this via cell phone towers -and it will cost ya, but very cool all-in-all. Makes the iPod Touch a little more useful now - especially if you could get a skype app on it.

A good blog example

March 21, 2008 · 1 Comment

My buddy Jason sent me a link to Sean Blanda’s blog today, there is a really good post on it today talking about his college newspaper and how they are using WordPress to publish their online edition - but what I really wanted to talk about was Sean’s blog itself.

This guy has a really great blog.

Number 1 - He’s customized the design. And wow, what a great design. Nothing too fancy, but nice. I love the post it note.

Number 2 - He’s starting conversations. It’s not about posting - but engaging.

Number 3 - He’s putting up fresh content. Talking about how to run an online paper with WordPress is cool.

Keep an eye on this guy and his blog…it should be an interesting conversation to enjoy.

“The Facebook” is dying?

March 18, 2008 · 2 Comments

I found a post at Times Online talking about how some of the bigger social networking sites are dropping membership:

Could the party be over for the big social networks such as Facebook, MySpace and Bebo? Last month it emerged Facebook had suffered a 5% drop in members since December, according to Nielsen Online, the web analyst.

So the real question is are people move to other social networks or are they quiting the “scene”? The article speculates that people may be doing less posting because of the fear of party photos getting out. I disagree with that - the younger generation, in my opinion, is less concerned about their private vs. public image…I think they just feel like it is their image.

The story also talks about the almost impossible job of deleting a facebook profile. It appears you can deactivate - but not delete. That makes it uncomfortable for users who want to disconnect from the site.

Either way, it appears the honeymoon may be wanning and we have to deal with the reality of some of these sites. There is so much benefit to be had with the how interactions can happen - but it really about sites figuring out how to best mesh with the conversation and make it easier and better.

Tag Clouds are Yummy!

March 12, 2008 · No Comments

I love tag clouds!   I would like to see then everywhere.

Can you imagine, tag clouds at the grocery store…you go for some milk and boom - you’ve got the milk but the cloud islayed over it giving you the white vs. chocolate vs. strawberry, overlaid with Whole vs. 1% vs. 2%.  Now that would be cool.

My theory is the future of web navigation will be tag cloud like conventions.  Instead of the super tree which drills forever, you’ll get a cloud and you can drill your way in.  Hot, hot, hot.

Here is a post from Soical Media Today called “The Impact of Words: Using Tag Clouds

As I was sifting through the data over a weekend I started to see patterns in the words that were being used by respondents. Immediately I started to create columns so to count the amount of times these words were mentioned, effectively starting to build my own tag cloud. After a few hours I sat back and said to my self, “Self, don’t be a dumb-ass, there must be a way to do this automatically.” An of course, there is :TagCrowd.

So - don’t be surprised if the next time you’re looking for some cheese that they tag cloud can hook you up!
