About Tom

In the beginning:
When I first started the blog, it was an internal-to-my-IT-job blog.  It went well – I focused on issues and links pertinent to the things going on in an IT department.  A few months later, we bumped it up, secured tomaltman.com and here we are.

For the about a year or two, it was about the “wedia conversation”.  You can find a lot of those articles in the archives, I really liked wedia (the combination of we the people and media) and internet technology – and you will still see the wedia theme creep in once in a while.

Phase 2:
Time to add a layer.  Not sure if that was a good thing or not – but I was looking around and trying to find out who Tom Altman was/is.  Which brings us to…

Phase 3:
Today.  We’ll call this the “Crushing it” phase.  Inspired by Gary Vaynerchuk and his book “Crushing It“.  This is about me and building this site into my personal brand.

I’m not a believer in the separation of home and work.  I think you just are who you are,and it doesn’t really matter where. If you’re happy at home – you’re happy at work.  Same goes if you’re not happy.  And I want to be happy.

You will see a few different categories, some of them will be WordPress, books and religion/philosophy.

I didn’t grow up with religion.  To find out more about my journey – head over to Tom’s Religion.

The Altmans take Colorado.

Other Stuff:
I love my family.  My wife Colleen and our 3 boys (Kale, Nash and Dade).  See more info about that at altmanville.com.

Outside of family, I really enjoy Volkswagens and motorcycles.  Over my years (born in 1972) I have owned about 30 differnet cars – most VW’s, but my favorites are station wagons and samba’s.

I also enjoy motorcycles.  My latest purchase is a Honda St1300.  It’s a great Sport-Touring bike.  I love it.

Prior to that I have also had a Yamaha Roadliner, Yamaha FZ1, Honda Interceptor and a Honda Nighthawk.

Tom’s History/Past
I am definitely a computer geek.  It may be better to call me a web geek.  Although my first computer was a Commador 64, second a 386 – by the time I got my third a 486DX2…I was on the net.  OK, it was BBS and CompuServ, but it was the web.

Prior to getting in the computer business, I was a radio DJ.  I really enjoyed the job.  Work part-time at KHAK in Cedar Rapids, then took a full-time gig in Waterloo at a new station called “The Hog.”  It’s funny how closely the radio business and modern day web development business is.  We used to do so much marketing of ourselves because the owners never wanted to spend any money.

Now I work in web development at a local media company – trying as hard as I can to break the thing wide open.

So take a look around and let me know what you think.  :)
