The Acer C720 has been around the block a few times. It originally debuted in 2013 and has been selling like hot cakes ever since. This is mostly due to the fact that it sports the Intel Celeron 2955U CPU with Haswell micro-architecture. This CPU alone is like getting a 50% boost in performance over most Chromebooks on the market. Just compare the Octane benchmarks to see for yourself.

Hardware & Performance

The LCD panel in this laptop is pretty standard, nothing too fancy. Just an 11.6″ matte screen at 1366×768 resolution. This is on-par with the LCD panels offered in other Chromebooks, like the Acer Chromebook 11. It might not be the very best screen available, but the performance of this model more than makes up for it. Not that the screen is terrible, it’s certainly good enough to enjoy a movie on this laptop.

Google Octane Benchmark: 11,600

The Acer C720 doesn’t have the newest Intel chip available in a Chromebook, however, it does have a fairly powerful one. The Celeron Haswell CPU is a generation or two behind, yet outperforms everything but the very best on the market. That’s the main reason I recommend this laptop as a great value. The solid build quality and performance stand out.

The connectivity of this model is fairly standard. It has a USB 3.0 port, a USB 2.0 port, an HDMI port, combination headphone/microphone port, along with an SD card slot for storage expansion. While most Chromebooks do have a very limited amount of internal storage, adding an SD card or a USB flash drive will increase their storage capacity quite easily.

This Chromebook does come with a somewhat outdated web cam. Like a lot of inexpensive devices, this laptop has a VGA camera with 640×480 resolution. The image quality is quite poor compared to newer cameras that more expensive laptops and smartphones have. However, it’s better than nothing. The web cam will let you video chat right out of the box.

Build Quality

The entire chassis is made out of plastic. The plastic on the bottom is extremely strong and durable. The build of this machine just feels so much more solid than other Chromebooks. The plastic doesn’t tend to flex and bend when the screen is adjusted or the laptop is held in one hand.

The keyboard is really nice on the C720. It’s a full-size black on black chiclet style keyboard that’s loaded with special function keys. Unlike most laptops, these are dedicated function keys that don’t require you to hold an “Fn” button. Adjust volume, screen brightness, launch apps or go forwards and backwards in your browser by pressing a single button. The keyboard is quite spacious and comfortable.

This laptop is extremely thin and light. It’s less than an inch thick and weighs in under 3 pounds. The small size, along with the durability of the case, makes this an excellent option for taking on the go. You can just throw it in your backpack without having to worry too much about breaking it.

The one downside to the increased performance of the C720, it requires more ventilation to keep it cool. This laptop DOES in fact have a cooling fan to cool the CPU. There’s a vent on the backside where the fan blows through a heat-sink. It’s important to keep the fan clean and clear in order to prevent problems and damage caused by overheating.

I really like the idea of a fanless operation. If you’ve ever had a laptop die from overheating you might feel the same way. The more substantial Intel Celeron processor creates more heat that needs to be dissipated.

I think it’s important to note that the power connector is very small on this Chromebook. It’s smaller than a 3.5mm headphone plug for reference. You need to be extremely careful as damaging this plug could mean a search for a new power adapter or a dead power jack.

Conclusion

The Acer C720 is an older model, yet nothing has surpassed it yet in terms of performance and overall value. It’s built well, runs fast and has a somewhat better screen than most 11.6″ Chromebooks. You will love just how fast, secure and portable this Chromebook really is.
