Your IT department is not a business

Over the 10+ years I have been in IT, it probably comes up once every 2 years.  Whatever thing we’re building is not only gonna fix our current problem – but it’s gonna fix everyone’s problem.

When I caught the computerworld UK post called “Run IT as a business — why that’s a train wreck waiting to happen” – it was a serious flashback.

WordPress Frameworks

There are a handful of WordPress frameworks out on the inter-tubes.  They are used like frameworks for other platforms – in WordPress they speed development of themes.

Being that most of us are working against multiple deadlines at one time, we need to be able to save ourselves as much time and headache as possible, and help prevent ourselves from unnecessarily re-inventing the wheel. That is why frameworks are such a time and life saver in the development arena. (Actually, frameworks are simple time savers regardless of whether or not you are facing a deadline.)

Here are six of the most popular from Pro Blog Design.

How telemarketing lists are made

Not sure who owns this site “wediabuzz.com” – I just know who used to own it…me.  I had it in my Google Reader feed, I let it lapse and then it started to percolate again.

Either way – this is a good post.  ”How telemarketing lists are made

One such company compiles a consumer list that can be used by any number of customers that are looking for a specific product or service. These lists can be used to target people who are looking for such items as car or home insurance, real estates, cars and more.

WordPress sans plugins

I love WordPress.  But the more I dig in, the more cool plugins I find and install – and they are cool.

Then (cue ominous music) the netowrk/server guy Tim calls and says, “Hey – something is slowing the server”.  So you deactivate them and say “what about now” and he says, “yea – it is better now…must have been a blip”.  You know it wasn’t a blip…it was the plugin.

So – imagine my surprise when I say this article “How to Do ‘XYZ’ Without a WordPress Plugin

If you do a quick Google search for, “without a plugin”, you’ll find a gazillion results for how to accomplish simple to complex tasks for WordPress without the need of a plugin.

With so many articles about not using WordPress plugins, it just begs the question: “What’s wrong with WordPress plugins in the first place?”

It’s a good read.  Check it out – I’m planning to see what I can do to keep the resource police off my back.

The Real ROI

From Only Dead Fish:

Accountability is an almost obsessive objective for most businesses. If I put this in, what can I get out?

Categorize Users

He-he-heeee, my plan to take over the universe is almost complete.  OK – maybe not…put seriously.  If we can categorize users – then we can probably use categories to restrict them too…like user groups.  Hmm.  I see potential.

Assign User Categories

Although it appears to be in Italian:

This plugin allows to assign categories to users.

Read Write Web has a great post on Facebook and Zuckberg:

Zuckerberg spent 60 seconds talking about Facebook’s privacy policies. His statements were of major importance for the world’s largest social network – and his arguments in favor of an about-face on privacy deserve close scrutiny.

Wow, I know the “younger generations” are more forgiving with private information – but seriously – they are not stupid.
