Marketing to Women

Shopping in Beijing

This is from a Mashable post entitled “10 Musts for Marketing to Women on Facebook“, but it just as relevant outside of facebook too.

Here are my top 3:

1. Quality Counts

Tom’s Comments: This is top #1 no matter what.  People was and need quality, and as I have said already.  2010 is the year of customer service, and quality helps.

6. Complement Her Life, Don’t Complicate It

Tom’s Comments: This goes for men, women and children.  We just don’t have the time (or don;t take the time) so if we can make something “easy” then it will follow the principal of the path of least resistance.

9. Remember: She’s a Social Shopper

Tom’s Comment: How true is this.  I know my wife needs the feedback from me and her friends as she shops.

Check out the other 7 ideas and add any others you can think of to the comments.

Thanks,
tom

SEO in WordPress

WordPress
Image via Wikipedia

There is a lot of buzz around WordPress in if it is good as an SEO engine.  And after reading some posts (viperchill.com, yoast.com) I can say – it may not be great out of the box, but you can really make it sing with a little work.

I’m about half way through the ViperChill post and will then cross reference that with the post from Joost (pronouces “yoast” as in toast).

There are some really good points – check them out and add any others you find.

It is certain there needs to be help with Titles.  Many people use All In One SEO, I like Yoast’s suggestion of Headspace.

More from Google on titles:

Speed is a good thing to consider – many people like the WP Super Cache – or WP Total Cache.  Cacheing will help tremendously.

Take a deep dive and see what your favorites are.

Amazon CDN Grows Up, Adds Flash Streaming

We’ve been looking at CDN’s, there are lot of good choices.  But it is hard to bet against Amazon.

When Amazon introduced its CloudFront CDN last year, one of the biggest knocks against the service was that it wasn’t primed for the delivery of video. That changed today, with the addition of video streaming capabilities in the form of Adobe’s Flash Media Server.

New Windows Smartphone Includes Built-in PowerPoint Projector

I have always loved Volkswagens.  Maybe it was because my dad worked on them for 40 years.  But they remind me a lot of Microsoft.  Everytime you are about to give up and throw in the towel for them – they come out with something so cool…you cannot help yourself.

Now they have done it with a new phone.  Let me tell you – I have had three windows mobile based phones.  They have all pretty much stunk.  Now – I always managed to get them sync’d with Outlook – but things failed pretty quickly after that.

Search the news for phones today and it is hard to find a Windows Mobile one int he news.  Then this:

LG and AT&T have just announced the launch of a new Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone with one standout feature: a built-in projector for displaying PowerPoint slideshows on the go. OK, OK, that’s not all the projector can be used for – the DLP pico projector can display other media too, like photos or videos. But let’s get real here – the most common use for projectors, especially in the business world, is slideshows.

Seriously – this is something we’ve heard rumors about.  Nut no iPhone or Android I’ve seen is even rumoring these yet.

Time to build a cheap TV station

A broadcasting center at a TV Studio in Olympi...
Image via Wikipedia

About a year ago I posted an article titled “Rebuild a TV station on the cheap” – as I stated in that post, the CEO of the company I work for – Chuck Peters said – do you think you really can?  I said – I have no idea.  Blew it off – but it bothered me until now.  So – now, 11 months later, I’ve put a pencil to it.

The Premise

We have a TV station (kcrg.com) which needs to take it to the next level.  I’m not sure what our budget is to rebuild the TV station, I have heard numbers from $8 to $20 million.  Either way, in my opinion…that’s WAY too much.

I really like podcasts – I listen/watch (for me is is mostly listen, but many are also a video feed) around 10-25 hours each week.  So I know a good one when I heard/see it.  One of my favorites, is twit.tv.  Leo Laporte has built a killer network on a low cost budget.  Now granted – that budget is bigger than a small podcast operator, but this is reasonable compared to the $8 million number.

The System

My inspiration, as I said before, has basically come from Leo’s system – here is a better idea from his wiki.

Audio
It starts with the audio – nothing too fancy – but a nice audio board and mics.

Streaming
We need streaming stuff too – we’re going real time.

Video
This is a hard one for me – lots of guesses and probably too low.

Other
We’re looking at some LED lighting and various computers

[table id=1 /]

That adds up to $473,000 – which is a lot of money.  Plus, I’m sure I have forgotten a bunch – so let’s double it, just to be safe.  $1 million.

Now – some of what needs to be “fixed” is networking and construction.  Lets add $750,000 more for that – and also $250,000 for anything else I forgot.

That’s a total of $2 million.  I realize that is a lot – but this is a very nice station.  One that has been proven on a handful of podcasts and one that will work from broadcast too – we just have to let our past go and move to the new.

OK – please fill it full of holes, I appreciate the feedback.  What have I forgot that cost so much?

audio board and processing (est) $35,000
heil mics, pop filter and stand x 3 $500 $1,500
wireless mics x 3 $500 $1,500
headphones x 3 $100 $300

It’s always a chore to change the look of your blog.  I start with such good ideas – then it fizzles.

I’ll have to see what I can dig up – if you know of any cool themes…let me know.
