Apple and their two heads

February 7, 2008 · No Comments

It’s funny as I ponder the idea of switching from a PC to Mac. On one had you get the Mac fanboys telling you its so easy - there is no problem. You’ll just “know” how to use it when you get one - and then we get a link from Apple showing us how to “make the switch“.

Maybe I too geeky - or maybe I’m resiting the move, but it seems like I want to have more comparisons. Like “finder” on the Mac is similar to “my computer” on a PC.

I guess I’ll have to keep looking - maybe there are videos by some PC users who have made the switch.

Macs Are The Platform Of New Media

January 2, 2008 · No Comments

Yes - I agree with the title of this post and the corresponding post over at Podcasting News…but I think they are forgetting something.

For people working in new media, Macs are especially compelling. The iLife suite is free and offers great tools for getting started with podcasting and video podcasting. And two of the best audio and video apps, Logic and Final Cut, are Mac-only.

Dell has a problem. It’s got great hardware, but it’s stuck with Windows Vista, a mishmash of third-party apps and craplets.

And you can’t do new media on crapware.

Macs are nice, hands down the best hardware on the market…but the most compelling part of the puzzle to me is the fact that I can have my cake and eat it too.  Dell, HP, Sony and the others have everything Macs have except one thing…Macs can run both Mac’s Leopard and Windows whatever.

For me that is the key…too much Microsoft hate out there.  :)

Best Operating System Ever Written

October 31, 2007 · No Comments

Wow - some big words from PC Mag talking about the new version of Apple’s OSX - Leopard.

“like truly automated backups, preview images in folders, and notes and to-do lists integrated into the mail program”

Here is a link to a “Windows Guy” (but one I have found very level headed) with his thoughts, Paul Thurrott.

And then a link to an Apple Fanboy - with a Leopard post - which really turns out to be a Microsoft bash.

Either way you cut - Apple is definetly making a stir in the “OS Wars”

To Mac or Not to Mac - is there a question?

September 18, 2007 · No Comments

I was just talking with Kim H the other day and explaining some of the “hot” topics I have been hearing the most about…they were IPTV and Apple.

IPTV - is the internet protocol television, where shows are “broadcast” over the net. Apple - in the context that Microsoft is dead and the Mac is moving in and I have to say - the new mac books are very intriguing, especially for those who need to use programs which are “mac” and also those which are “PC”.

But what these podcasts and websites are saying is the Mac is rolling over the PC and back up before you get it too.

An article in the NYT doesn’t agree:
“The official line from Apple is that all has gone swimmingly. The company said it shipped 1.52 million Macs in the first quarter of this year, up 35 percent from the year-ago quarter. In the second quarter through June 30, it shipped 1.76 million Macs, up 32 percent from a year ago, an all-time quarterly record.

Funny thing, though: based on the ratio of Windows and Macs actually in use, no gains can be seen for Apple. “

So, depending on which set of fanboys you believe - it’s Mac or PC.
