The original Toshiba Chromebook 2 has always been a favorite among reviewers and Chromebook enthusiasts. The new 2015 model is even better than the original.

The new Celeron 3215U processor is a much-appreciated upgrade, boosting the Octane benchmark well beyond the competition in this price range.

If you are looking to go “full on chromebook” – then opt for the Celeron and you will be a very happy camper.  This may be the Chromebook that is the last straw which breaks the “non-cloud” computer’s back.

The amazing build quality along with a beautiful Full HD 1920×1080 IPS display rounds out a really impressive package.

Hardware & Performance

The original Toshiba Chromebook 2 offered something that few other Chromebooks were able to muster. Namely, a full HD IPS display that didn’t look like complete garbage. This made the Toshiba Chromebook 2 a beacon of display delight in a sea of displays plagued with washed out color and poor viewing angles.

 Google Octane Benchmark: 17,900

The problem? The original Chromebook 2 by Toshiba came with a very lackluster processor. The new 2015 edition offers the same gorgeous display that everyone grew to love with a very nice upgrade in the performance department. This new model, the CB35-C3300, has the same luscious 13.3″ IPS display with Intel’s newest 3215U Celeron processor which features Broadwell micro-architecture.

This made the Chromebook 2 from Toshiba go from ho-hum to yum-yum. Now you can have your cake (display) and eat it too (run 60fps 1080p videos). What’s the point of having the best LCD display in all of Chromebookdom if you can’t do anything impressive with it? Heck, for another $100, you can even drop in a Core i5 processor and own what is arguably the finest Chromebook available.

The performance upgrade from the original to the 2015 edition is like going from a cellphone to a full-fledged computer, capable of intensive applications. The performance increase basically doubles the Google Octane Benchmark results. Are you going to notice a difference? Only if you’re conscious.

Do you like streaming 1080p video? Yeah, me too. While other Chromebooks might be able to pull of streaming 1080p video, what’s the point if you don’t have a 1080p like the one in this model. Imagine, smooth scrolling, ultra-responsive web browsing, and the best video experience you could possibly expect from a laptop. Like to overdose on tabs and still watch videos? Me too. The new Toshiba Chromebook 2 handles this with ease.

The external ports are fairly standard yet somewhat better than other Chromebooks. You get a USB 3.0 port, a USB 2.0 port, full-size SD card slot and a full-size HDMI output. A lot of other Chromebooks try to pass off micro SD card slots and micro-HDMI ports. Try putting a full-size SD card in a micro-SD slot. It’s not going to happen. However, you can easily convert a micro-SD card with a full-size card adapter. The full-size HDMI port takes the pain out of buying yet another HDMI cable or using a bulky adapter.

Build Quality

The only other noticeable upgrade to the new 2015 version of this model is the keyboard. The keyboard is slightly more responsive and soft to the touch and is completely backlit. If you like kicking back in bed with some Netflix before you doze off in the dark, having a backlit keyboard is the best.

The only real downsides to this Chromebook come with the build quality. The hardware is great, the performance is above average, yet some of the build elements aren’t entirely impressive. This is somewhat surprising coming from Toshiba, a company that has regularly put out some of the finest laptops on the market.

One of the first things you might notice is a little play in the display hinges. It’s not as though they don’t hold the screen up, however, they do have a bit of wobble to them. I would have really liked to see some nice tight hinges to hold up this outstanding display.

The keyboard and touchpad aren’t the best available either. The keyboard tends to flex a little bit, especially under heavy use. If you play intense games online and tend to use a little extra pressure on the keyboard you will see what I mean. The touchpad is textured and not as comfortable to use as some other models, even the low-end ones.

This isn’t to say that the new Toshiba Chromebook 2 doesn’t have a high-quality build. I just believe that the materials used could have been a little better, especially considering this is a second generation build. Perhaps a third generation build from Toshiba will take these things into account and finally provide us with a perfect model.

Conclusion

The Toshiba Chromebook 2, 2015 edition, with the Intel Celeron 3215U Broadwell CPU is probably about as good as it gets in the world of Chromebooks. While it may have a few small quirks, overall, this is really an impressive device with an amazing screen and excellent performance. At $329 I have no problem recommending this device to those who wish to use their Chromebook mainly for HD media consumption.
