The Acer Chromebook 15 with Core i5 processor represents the very best performance any reasonable amount of money can buy. The 15.6″ IPS display with matte finish is stellar, the build quality is outstanding, and the overall value of this machine compared to low-end models is quite good. If you want the very best Chromebook (other than a Google Chromebook Pixel) this Acer has you covered.

Hardware & Performance

This Acer Chromebook 15 with the latest generation Intel Core i5 5200U mobile processor outperforms every other readily available Chromebook on the market in the Google Octane Benchmark. It even outperforms Google’s very own Chromebook Pixel with the very same CPU by a small margin. The only Chromebooks that benchmark faster are Google’s Chromebook Pixel with Core i7 processor and Dell’s Chromebook 13 that has a slightly better Core i5 5300U CPU. These two models only come in slightly above the Chromebook 15 in terms of performance and are nearly impossible to find. Even if you did find one of them, they would be considerably more expensive.

Google Octane Benchmark: 25,300

The 15.6″ IPS display on this model supports full HD at 1920×1080 resolution. The display has a matte finish, which I tend to prefer. So how does this compare to the Toshiba Chromebook 2? They are both IPS, both full HD at 1920×1080, but the Toshiba Chromebook 2 display is only 13.3″ and has a glossy finish. Text is going to be much more readable with the larger 15.6″ screen. The matte finish on the Acer is also going to provide less glare than the glossy display on the Toshiba. Toshiba barely edges out Acer in terms for color balance and clarity, although not by much. Overall, any model of the Acer Chromebook 15 with the full HD IPS display, such as this one, is going to look quite nice.

The ports on this laptop are fairly standard and well rounded. You get a USB 3.0 port, a USB 2.0 port, full-size HDMI port, full-size SD card slot, and headphone jack. The USB ports and SD card slot will allow you to easily upgrade the storage of your Chromebook as well as access all of your pictures, videos and music. Nothing too special here, but definitely not lacking any important components. The one thing I really didn’t like is the fact that the SD card slot doesn’t take the SD card inside the laptop completely. The card just kind of hangs out the side and I imagine would be quite easily broken if the laptop was ever dropped. I prefer an SD card slot where the card locks in securely. Not really sure why such a large Chromebook would need to have such an inhospitable card slot.

Build Quality

The overall build quality of this machine is quite good indeed. The plastic chassis, available in black OR white, has a very solid feel to it. The hinges on the large 15.6″ IPS display are strong and don’t wobble like other models (*cough* Toshiba Chromebook 2). This machine is relatively lightweight for the size, although not nearly as compact and portable as other smaller Chromebooks.

The keyboard in this Acer Chromebook 15 is fairly standard as far as Chromebooks go. By now you may have noticed a pattern. Chromebooks have a fairly standardized keyboard across manufacturers. It’s a full size, island style chiclet keyboard that provides plenty of space to type without feeling crowded or making typos. The keyboard on this model is very easy to type on and is on-par with Acer’s other Chromebook offerings.

The cool thing about the standardized keyboard is the fact that it’s about the same size on this much larger Chromebook as it is on the smaller models. This allowed the engineers at Acer to place the stereo speakers next to the keyboard on either side. This is one of the only Chromebook models that has speakers that actually face you. Many of the more compact models have bottom mounted speakers that are all too easy to smother. The speakers are fairly loud for a laptop, sufficient to watch a movie without having to plug in external speakers.

The touchpad on this model gets the job done, but may be a little bit soft for some. It requires a little bit more pressure than other models to perform the same functions. It’s not unusable by any means, however, it’s just not as high of a quality as some of the other Chromebooks on the market.
