The following are common page level SEO issues, their possible causes and how to address them:

Poor Search Engine Ranking : Most websites are not highly ranked in search engines such as Google. If your site is preforming poorly – it could be these reasons:

  • You Have Selected Very Competitive Keywords
A common reason for not getting ranked in search engines is your keyword/keyword phrase is highly competitive. This is especially true if a site is new and has not had time to acquire links. When people search – most click on the first handful of results.  Look at the sites on the first page of any popular search engine. Now look at their backlinks – are they optimized? Do they have a high page rank? Are they an authority websites?
    – If the answer is ‘YES’, it will not be an easy task.  Instead of taking on that large of a task – maybe you need to look at less competitive keywords instead. This is why we created the free seo test – see what is working and what is not.  We can run a quick test and then a larger one later – if necessary.  Our reliable seo professionals will analyze and suggest the best way to improve.
  • Your Site Has HTML Errors
HTML is finicky – many sites have HTML warnings or mistakes, some are worse than others.  So don’t feel you need to begin correcting all the errors on your site from the first to the last. Most errors will not cause search engines to stop crawling, BUT, HTML errors can stop them in their tracks – and this is BAD.  To find out if this is a problem, make sure your website’s HTML is verified. Google has a free tool called “Webmaster Tools” you can use to determine this. It will help you detect if there are crawling errors and show you. Once you have identified the problem, you can fix it immediately.
  • Your Website Is Not Optimized for Any Keyword
Another common reason for not being ranked is failure to optimize your website for any keyword. When building your site, you need to take your time and decide what key words to target and also make certain that these key words are incorporated on your page, title tags and meta description.  Each page can only be optimized for one keyword/keyword phrase.  If you have not done this yet, you need to do so as soon as you can – this is VERY important.  Use our seo checkng tool on this page to help you.
  • Your Website Lacks Backlinks
The number and quality of backlinks to your site is a large part in determining where you rank in a search engines result page. If you aren’t ranking for your keywords, open Google and try your keyword in the search box (without quotes) – then note the first 6 results. Go to a tool used for checking backlinks and check the number of backlinks these sites contain. Compare the results to your own website. This should give you an idea of the number of backlinks that you need to add to get to the top and that is if your other site work in in order.
  • Your Website is Still Young
Give your site enough time; search rankings don’t happen overnight. The newer your site is the longer you will have to wait to achieve a top ranking. Some refer to this as the “Google Sandbox” – it can be 90 days or more until search engines deem you ready.  And, the more competitive the target keywords are, the longer you will have to wait to appear at the top. Monitor your progress over time by observing your links and your ranking then comparing this to high ranking websites – record the or use a tool to check them. This will enable you to ensure you are on the right path.
  • You Are Having Issues with Google
Google has rules – not all website ownsers or SEO “experts” follow them.  This will cause you much trouble.  Many website owners today are having trouble with Google and their sites cannot perform well as required due to this. The following may be some reasons you are at odds with the Google, preventing your site from ranking high.
  • Your Website is Crammed With Spam Content
Does it makes sense when you read your website’s content – would others find it interesting?  If your site contains spam links, hidden texts or keywords, gibberish or scrapped content you might have trouble with Google. This is a serious offense that could get you a pure spam penalty. It might not be your fault for having gibberish content on your website as sometimes site visitors leave these in form of comment but there are web tools that can be used to wipe them out for instance word filters.  You need to know – and if you don’t read your content, why should others?
  • Your Website Has Hidden Keywords and Meta-Data which are Stuffed
It sounds better than it is – just a couple more mentions of that keyword.  Don’t do it – it is common to do these blunders, maybe unknowingly. You may think it is a fast track to great SEO.  Don’t think Google is not aware of this tactic.  Common ways in which site owners blunder are incorporating multiple versions of keywords into meta data, hiding content on pages using cascading style sheets or adding many keywords to image alt tags. To avoid these costly mistakes, it is imperative that you check your on-page SEO and make sure your are giving what Google expects of websites.
  • Your Content Has Been Stolen and Site Hacked
Another problem – content theft is common practice on the internet these days. It is quite unfortunate that many legitimate sites have fallen victims to these malicious individuals and ended up being penalized without actually engaging in black-hat ranking techniques. You might have trouble with Google just because somebody stole your content which is quite unfortunate! Hacking is another serious threat that is even harder to evade. Sites that are prone to hacking in most cases have concealed malware which is not still noticeable on the back-end coding. The best way to avoid trouble is to always check your site for any vulnerability using various tools that are available.

For any business owner, there are lots of things to take into account. You need to be sure of how to run your business efficiently, to get the proper success. Marketing looks at advertising your company, promoting it to the world. One of the top marketing techniques for business is SEO. This stands for Search Engine Optimization and is all to do with search ranking. In my opinion, every business needs to adopt SEO techniques, and here’s why:

  • Gets Your Website Noticed
SEO is the best way to get your site noticed through a search engine. Internet users are constantly using search engines to look for things. Just think how many times a day you Google something, now multiply that by millions. There are millions of people in the world with internet access.  Which means millions of people that can find your site through a search engine. If they find your site, then they’re more likely to use your business.
  • There Are No Extra Costs
You can adopt SEO techniques that boost your search rank for no extra cost. Unlike a technique like PPC, which makes you pay a fee every time your site is clicked on through a search engine. There are lots of different SEO techniques you can use to benefit your business. Search Engine Optimization revolves around ‘keywords’ and how best to utilize them. Not every business will use the same keywords. E.g. A law firm will look at keywords ideally suited to search engine optimization for Lawyers. Which will be different than search engine optimization for other businesses.
  • Taps Into The Mobile Market
Search Engine Optimization is a great way to tap into the mobile market. Look for mobile SEO tips and tricks to get your website higher up on mobile search engines. The majority of people in the western world are using mobile phones every day to browse the web. SEO is one of the best ways to get mobile users onto your website. All you need is to make a mobile-friendly version of your website and then apply SEO techniques.
  • Great For Local Business
Local SEO is a fantastic way to grow your business. It refers to the ‘local’ search results in a search engine. When you search for something, you sometimes find results of places near you, and a link to directions on Google maps. So local SEO is a fantastic way to grow your business locally and get more customers.

In short, SEO is one of the greatest digital marketing techniques for businesses. Adopting an SEO campaign is certain to see your business improve – if you’re currently struggling. You can bet your competitors are using SEO, so why aren’t you?!

Simple Ways To Raise Your Search Ranking

seo_graphicIs your website on the slide in the search rankings? Or has it always been on page fourteen of Google’s results? Either way, it will have a negative impact on your business. Here are some common problems and easy fixes that you can try out yourself or hire somebody to do for you.

Hire An SEO Specialist

First thing’s first – SEO is a complicated business that you need to stay on top of, all of the time. If you don’t have time to keep up to speed with updates and recommended practices, then you should consider looking at hiring SEO services. They will be able to address all of the problems listed below, and although they will cost you money, it is the quickest way to give your ranking a boost.

Fix Your Site Speed

Site speed is becoming an increasingly important factor when it comes to your search engine ranking. Why? Because anybody who asks a question of the search engine is one of their customers. And, like any other business, Google, Bing, and Yahoo! want to give their clients the best possible service. SO if your pages take a few minutes to load, you can bet that it will be having an effect on your rank. Use a service like Pingdom to get you started – it will also suggest some ways to improve your performance.

Keep Your Pages Updated

If you set up your website and just leave it, you are asking for trouble when it comes to getting ranked. Why? Because the search engines love fresh and new updates on your website. Whether that is new articles, blog posts or even a batch of new products, it doesn’t matter. The key is to ramp up your efforts and make it appear as if your website is being looked after.

Optimize For Mobile

The likes of Google are also looking at mobile compatibility. Did you know that over half of all searches come from mobiles, smartphones, and tablets? This is going to have a significant effect on online businesses in the very near future – if it hasn’t already. You need to be sure your website is mobile responsive and can be read cleanly and clearly on a smartphone. Otherwise, your rankings will stay in the lower echelons.

Get More Social Shares

Social media also plays its part in helping your rankings improve. If people are willing to share something you have created or offered on your website, then the search engines recognize that. They will trust you more as somebody in your industry with something interesting to say, and the result will be a real boost to your rankings. However, it’s important to make this an ongoing process.
There are many more little tactics that you can employ to raise your profile on the search engines. It cannot be stressed enough how important it is to get your website as high as possible. For example, the difference in traffic between page one and page two is around 35% – and beyond page three it is next to nothing. Get those ranking up and your site visits will increase, guaranteed.

Does the Google Bot index css hidden divs?

POST UPDATE 04/09/2015
Its been almost a year since we tried this…we think it is still vaild – but scroll down for some new links.

What did we test?

Well – we wanted to know if Google indexes hidden div’s in HTML code.  Seems logical that Google would – but who flippin’ knows – right?

Back when this test concluded and went live – March of 2013 the conclusion was Google did.  Which is cool.  But – its always good to keep testing.  And I was looking for the original files I used to test with…and they were no where to be found.  Which is fine, but not a good way to show people you are a good testing guy.

So we recreated it.

The Test: Does Google index hidden div’s?

People use this method all the time – its like hiding tabbed content.  But – does the copy “hiding” behind the tab ever see the light of day algorithm of google?  Well – it sure used to a year ago…so we think it still will.  But we may as well test it.

Here are the pages I set up to test.

2015 Tests

Here is the composite google search for the three terms.

Keyword/Test 1:  frediaconineda
2015-04-does-google-index-hidden-divs-01.htm

Keyword/Test 2: booleebagadolly
2015-04-does-google-index-hidden-divs-02.htm

Keyword/Test 3: sooweedingladoebadoo
2015-04-does-google-index-hidden-divs-03.htm

2014 Tests

Check these out…you can see the search results here.

Keyword/Test 1:  funkyityfootoo
2014-04-does-google-index-hidden-divs-01.htm

Keyword/Test 2: sassygogopantalones
2014-04-does-google-index-hidden-divs-02.htm

Keyword/Test 3: lillywillywallymon
2014-04-does-google-index-hidden-divs-03.htm

The visuals

The highlighted section (yellow) shows that all elements with the keyword, in this example the “H1” and the second “div” (shown with the orange text and arrows) have both been hidden with an inline style.  Then, we use CSS & javascript to show it after the page load.  The green circles are used to show you the existence of the “funkyityfootoo” keyword.

Conclusion

As we mentioned above – in 03/2013 Google indexed these just like other content on the page.  Information will be added here to tell us if that is still true.

It makes sense and is a valid test.  There are many, many websites which hide portions of content for a better user experience.  Some of those tabs have very boring information only nerds would look at.

Here is a quick link to the google search results for all three keywords.
