Go For The Feels: Helping An Ambivalent Employee Feel Good

It’s one of those oft used expressions: a happy employee is a productive one. And while productivity is the name of the game, regardless of the business you run, this isn’t the entire piece of the puzzle. Getting your employees to feel a sense of contribution towards the bigger picture, but also feeling pride within themselves, is one of those things that doesn’t seem to work together well. Many people feel that the work they do should generate a sense of self-satisfaction. But there are so many of us in the world that haven’t chosen a job that we want to do. As such, if you are tasked with making an employee feel good, despite their ambivalence towards the job, what can you do?

Focus On The Atmosphere (Literally)

There are so many ways to alter the feel of a place, and it’s incredibly underestimated. You can play with the senses, from sight, sound, smell, as well as that sensation of temperature. If you find your work is getting sluggish, especially with higher temperatures and a very stuffy office, ensuring that you install an air cooled chiller or at the very least provide an abundance of fans, gives everybody an opportunity to focus on their work without feeling that they are baking in the heat. Conversely, if they are too cold, you have got to provide that sense of comfort. As well as this, think about the atmosphere, in terms of noise, and even smell. Relaxing scents like lavender can do a lot to encourage calmness. Mint can help focus, and there are so many others out there that you might want to play with, especially if you sense that your employees are struggling in some way.

Give Them Challenges

Have you got a group of employees that are sluggish because they are bored? If we have a challenge in our daily lives, it gives us the opportunity to flex our creative muscles, but also, giving them something that’s just beyond their capability and encourage what is called the flow state, when everybody’s focus goes onto the task, and everything else gets drowned out. Encouraging challenges, and giving your employees the opportunity to stretch themselves helps them as well as yourself. Every employee should feel they’re challenged on occasion, especially those that are doing mind-numbingly dull admin work.

A Nice Place To Work

Simple, yet very effective. By giving your employees a nice place to work, somewhere that they can relax, but still get their work done means that you will encourage employees to return to the fore. Your employees can feel bored, unchallenged, or even worry about coming in because they don’t like the feel of the place, means that you’ve got to work hard at creating a place that calms the senses, but increases their focus. Encouraging an employee to feel good in this environment is a major challenge that you need to take on. Because an employee needs to get their work done, but there are so many other factors getting in the way, you’ve got to figure out a way to turn the whole environment into somewhere that truly encourages productivity, as well as happiness.
