SEO Tips – An Introduction

Everyone wants to know the hidden secrets behind top SEO rankings, don’t they? But the thing that we don’t all realise is that there is no secret about SEO – only smart strategies, strong implementation and ongoing SEO maintenance. If you’re wondering about how to get your site on page #1 (or even found at all), these three introductory SEO tips will help get you started:

Tip 1: Keyword Research

The key to high rankings is to start with the right SEO keywords.

SEO keywords are what people use to search for your business on Google and other search engines. Moreover, your entire Search Engine Optimisation strategy will revolve around your chosen keywords.

How do you go about determining what your SEO keywords are?

Start with the basics. Ask yourself “what keywords do I want my website to show up for?” For instance, if you sell baby clothing in Sydney, your first three SEO keywords might be:

  1. baby clothes
  2. baby clothing
  3. baby clothes in sydney

This means that ideally, when someone types in one of these keywords into Google, you’ll want your site to show up.

A good way of kick-starting your SEO keyword research is to do conduct some searches on Google yourself. Try typing in various keywords and assessing what comes up. If you see lots of your competitors on the first page of results, this is a good indicator of a strong SEO keyword. Sometimes, though, more research can be required to determine more effective and competitive keywords – or to determine which keywords you should focus on.

Tip 2: Website Copy

Once you’ve got your keywords sorted, it’s time to focus on your website copy.

You will need to compose or rework your website copy around your SEO keywords to create an optimal site. Aim for a keyword density (i.e. how many times you use your keywords) of around 3-5% and ensure that your keywords flow logically and naturally within your text. Make sure your density is no greater than 3-4% – anything more and Google may penalise your site and move it to the bottom of results rankings.

Tip 3: Page Headings

Making sure that each page of your website uses defined Page Headings, with the right HTML syntax, is crucial for your SEO.

Again, use your SEO keywords in the main headings of each page. Using keywords in your headings will help search engines determine which words of your site are important and worth noting, which will help your rankings and prominence in search results.

Continuing on from the example above, if your main keyword was “baby clothes” you might have one page called “baby clothes for boys” and another page called “baby clothes for girls.” These need to be coded with the right HTML markups to have an impact on your SEO.
