Starting a new business comes with many decisions you need to make. Getting that idea swirling in your head is only the first of many things you will need to think about and consider. And these decisions don’t just stop when you get up and running. Every day of your operation will require you to make a decision. Some will be easy, some not so much, but you will still need to be able to make the decisions regardless.
But focusing on the beginning of your journey and getting up and running. What decisions will you need to be making?
Employees
You will need to decide if you will be hiring employees at any point. Many businesses can operate with just you alone, which is perfectly fine; however, others require you to hire employees, and you need to be sure that you can meet the obligations required of you when you become an employer. From registering for an EIN to paying workers comp insurance, disability insurance, and more, it will not only require you to get business insurance quotes but also offer a range of employee benefits, put payroll in place, and follow OSHA guidelines to ensure health and safety standards are met at all times.
In House Or Outsourcing
This goes hand in hand with taking on employees. On the one hand, you can build your own in-house team to take care of all of your operations. From IT systems to accounting, payroll HR, etc., or you can choose to outsource this to other companies to care for you. In-house teams can come with a greater aspect of control but a more significant financial outlay to purchase the equipment you need and get the right team on board. At the same time, outsourcing means you need to relinquish some level of control for what you outsource, but you can benefit from lower costs and a greater level of experience and skill set.
Persist Or Give Up
In the early days of a new business, it might seem like everything is against you, and you are filing an uphill battle. But you need to decide if this is a battle you are prepared to fight and that it is one worth fighting for. There is no shame in admitting that maybe this wasn’t right for you, or the timing was off, etc., but this is a difficult decision to make. Should you admit defeat or keep on moving forward? The wrong decision, either way, can have massive implications for you and your business and this is likely going to be one of the most challenging decisions you’ll have to make.
Grow Or Remain
While you might not be in a position to expand in the first stages of your business, you should be thinking about it regularly. You need to identify opportunities, pinpoint market gaps, and assess your strength and viability to diversify and pursue opportunities. Much like the point above, if you make the wrong decisions and move too fast or miss the ideal window, you jeopardize everything you’ve worked hard for.
Running a business requires you to make many decisions; some can be spontaneous, but the majority will need to be carefully thought out to avoid making mistakes that can be detrimental to your success.
