So - can we do this on KCRG too?

August 29, 2007 · No Comments

So You Tube released over video ads this week. So when we will these hit the small screen?

I figured it out last night while watching “Last Comic Standing” - when I witnessed no less than 249 ads for the new “Bionic Woman”.

Seriously, do you think we could be looking at these ‘over’ ads for all advertising? Or is this is way that we can pack MORE ads into the same “space”? Do we think we could ‘keep’ more people engaged with no traditional ads and all over ads?

OK - could this take local TV out of the picture

August 29, 2007 · No Comments

So, I’m not sure if I have shared my love for the Tom Green Show yet. And this is not the old MTV Tom Green or the Jay Leno thing - but the internet show…or as Tom calls it the “Nation Web-o-vision” show. He is doing some really innovative stuff - right from his living room…but the caveat is the cost. He has a number of cameras and equipment.

Well, the rules have changed. It takes me to something I found today called Mogulus. This is amazing technology and would offer the individual the opportunity to broadcast their own “news program”. Wow, like kids could sit at home and do cool stuff.

The only component missing is marketing…have I spoke to you about this thing called “viral marketing” yet?

You can’t get there from here - Why mainstream media is way up a creek…

August 28, 2007 · No Comments

Jason K sent me this link the other day - “You can’t get there from here - Why mainstream media is way up a creek…”

Jason was asking if I thought he should share it with the newsroom - thinking it may freak them out or whatever…and my first reaction was “send it to them”, thinking it would se them off adn makethem think.

Then, I read the article again - and I was like “send it to them”, but for a different reason…to show them what these people are thinking.

But my real question/problem is I’m not sure if I get it. I just have a hard time thinking “people” or “the community” would report news if the media organizations were not involved. Do you really think Joe Shmoe would report on something - do we really think the community is that strong?

I just don’t see it - I would love to hear or find an example to compare this to…any thoughts?

Google Health Is Coming to Digitize Your Records

August 27, 2007 · No Comments

Maybe it is just because my wife is in the health profession, my first reaction to Google digitizing health records was a vision of HIPPA nightmare.

But after that storm blew over - I was like…this is cool. Can you imagine if all this information was digital? On the most basic note - you go to the doctor and they issue a prescription - boom…it ends up at your pharmacy of choice without paper or the doctor’s office calling.

Now kick it up a notch and you are in the doctor’s office and they find something that requires you to go to a specialist or the ER. You head there - and the entire doctor visit you were just at makes it to the ER before you do and they are prepped and ready for you? Or how about the EMT on the scene of an accident - they have wireless and can send the real time data to the ER doctors to monitor you in real time until you arrive.

Now that is technology working to help you.

Lose them with a pro-roll - 70% of Viewers Stop Watching a Video if it Shows a 10-Second Advertisement

August 23, 2007 · No Comments

This is a quote from the article YouTube Videos to Have ‘Overlay’ Ads

“Shiva Rajaraman, product manager for YouTube, said internal tests show more than 70 percent of people give up when they see a pre-roll. By contrast, less than 10 percent decide to close an overlay, which they can exit by clicking on an “X” in a corner.”

We need to take a close look at this as we move towards more video on the web.

Great article.

Now this is innovation

August 22, 2007 · No Comments

Sometimes - innovation takes a giant leap, with both feet. It happened when Apple invented the iPod and I think it happened when Nooka invented the dot watch. Click here - then click “nooka story” (remind me to tell you how much I like Flash interfaces)

It is just really cool to see a guy say “Hey, there has to be more than 2 ways to tell time!” So he invented this dot watch - and how cool is that.

Now, how can we take a look at our content and do the same thing - there has to be more ways to use this content than JUST TV and newspaper.

Top 10 Best Newspaper Websites

August 17, 2007 · No Comments

I’m not sure which article I like better - the 10 sites or the American Newspapers and the Internet: Threat or Opportunity? - but this is definitely it. Take a look at this link and I will give you my thoughts on the top ten below.

I really like a lot of the different stuff I see on each site - maybe, if I have some time later I will cut and paste them all together to make “tom’s cool newspaper site”.

But some of my favorites are:
The Chron - because of their super simple navigation.
Naples News - this site just “feels” good, it has a great positive vibe.
Bakersfield - use of color

So, here the list I looked at first: The Bivings Report Top 10

Also - here is another top 10 for you to enjoy: More Top 10 from Howard Owens in response to the other top 10.

This is the type of people we need to recruit

August 17, 2007 · No Comments

This is an entry Gazette Online has recently had in it’s “First Day of School” promotion.

Alex Murphy of Iowa City takes the cake, you have to watch this video - this is the type of guy we need to get connected with and have be a part of our media revolution. This is innovative thinking.

Keep up the good stuff!

The Way Back Machine - Internet Archive

August 16, 2007 · No Comments

This is a pretty cool little tool that started in 1996 archiving the internet. It sends out it’s little spider to comb the web and pickup on all the sites it finds - and copies them.

WayBackMachine

So what you can do - it put in a site ans see it’s eveolution…Gazette Online or KCRG.

Take a look - each one of those days is a snap shop. Sometimes the images don;t show up - but it gives you a good idea.

Team Building 2.0

August 15, 2007 · No Comments

Wow, this was a great article/You Tube I ran across while perusing Facebook. It is called Unilever League Of Rock Music Based Team Building.

It’s not that this will work for everyone - but that it is thinking beyond the classic “taking this off-site” or “adventure camp” style team building. Very cool.
